Sportsbet Betting Review
Below is a comprehensive and honest Sportsbet betting review, including our user experience for sports and racing markets on the site, the history of Sportsbet , and the pros and cons of using the Sportsbet betting website.
This Sportsbet betting review will be updated through new versions of the site, new offers and unique features that Sportsbet have to offer.
Who are Sportsbet?
Sportbet are an Australian-licensed wagering company offering racing and sports betting throughout Australia. They begun in Darwin way back in 1993 and continue to be licensed in the Northern Territory.
While on the verge of bankruptcy in 2005, Matthew Tripp purchased the struggling business for a measly $250,000, and turned them into gold soon afterwards. Following the Tripp acquisition, Sportsbet enjoyed a massive turnaround and currently employs 250+ staff, becoming one of the top 3 online bookmakers in Australia, if not #1.
In May 2009 Irish based bookmaker Paddy Power acquired 51% of Sportsbet and in the year following took the full 100% ownership of the company, leaving Matthew Tripp (now CrownBet CEO) with a pretty penny in his pocket.
Sportsbet are pretty hard to escape when you turn on the TV, radio or open the newspaper, and have run aggressive marketing campaigns towards the ‘average bloke’, which has seen them become widely accepted to newbies to wagering and the common man.
They cast a wide net, and their customer base is one of the largest in wagering.
Sportsbet Website Layout
Sportsbet have the usual beginner-friendly three column layout, however they use their RHS section much more extensively than agencies such as CrownBet and Ladbrokes.
The upcoming three Next Up racing markets are listed in the center, along with an attractive and practical rotating banner carousel which allows you to place a bet straight to the betslip.
The LHS menu contains all of the usual markets, and Quick Links but do not have the added ease of the CrownBet, or Madbookie sites which feature a subcategory drop-down for added ease.
Popular trending ‘Multi Picks’ multi bet selections are displayed in the right column below the betting slip, a vast improvent from CrownBets ‘Roll the Dice’.
Sportsbet Sports Markets
Again for the sake of examples we will continue with the AFL theme.
When you click on a LHS market you’re taken directly to the full market page. On this page the Head to Head markets for all games appear, including future rounds.
If you were to select a sport with numerous leagues, a drop-down menu would appear in the center column enabling you to pick specific leagues (up until odds are released). Which is very handy.
Single match markets
We’ve always found the individual sports markets great. The market will display all of the major markets including match and total points lines, margin, and the more popular exotic markets.
Moving down the page shows the rest of the exotic markets, which can be expanded to view through the accordion layout. Similar to CrownBet and Ladbrokes but they just seem to make it a little easier and easier to digest.
We give these two thumbs up. We hear all the time that the Sportsbet site looks like an excel spreadsheet, so I guess in a way that’s what we’re looking for. As long as it’s easy to find a market, we don’t really care.
Sportsbet Racing Markets
Clicking on the expandable LHS racing menu will drop down to feature the Next 5 Races, All Racing, Horse Racing, Harness Racing, Greyhound Racing and “Watch Vic Racing Live” section (live streaming of Victorian thoroughbred racing).
Individual Race Markets
The Sportsbet race markets make it easy to place a bet on a race, however getting there is a little tough and at times it’s like trying to work your way through an excel spreadsheet. Once in the actual race market however it’s a pleasant experience.
There is a strong Australian horse racing market that covers Australia and International racing. City Best, Country Best, Fixed Odds, Top Fluc, SP, Quinellas and Trifectas are available for thoroughbred racing while harness racing and greyhound racing are paid at Home Tote. Quaddie, Double, Treble and Super6 bets are also available for most races with a form guide for each race.
Sportsbet offers Running Doubles and Daily Doubles on selected tracks. Flexi Betting can be used on Doubles wagers, which give you a percentage of the full unit dividend.
The racing form guide can be found for any runner in a race, and will give you a rating for each horse including form over track, distance, breeding and a comment from an expert in regards to chances and form. A nice feature, which also includes a full form guide for each race.
The betting slip is very nice and user friendly. As legs are added the they are displayed on top of one other in the RHS column. As you move your cursor over the (?) icon for each leg, the bet details are displayed, including the the maximum accepted stake amount. As you input wager amounts the total stake and estimated returns are displayed at the bottom of the slip.
The sports and racing sections of the website are integrated so that racing and sports selections can be combined in multis and exotic multis very easyily.
Unique Site Features
As far as uniqueness, Sportsbet are probably lacking in this area. Unlike other bookmakers they rely on solid advertising and an image to gain acquisition and keep a customer base, and they do it well.
They do however offer –
Blackbook – Blackbook allows racing punters to follow a thoroughbred, harness or greyhound runner and to be notified by SMS or email on the day of the event.
Live Victorian Horse Racing –
Stream live Victorian horse racing straight to your mobile, tablet and desktop for free.
Punters Club –
We had a pretty good time with the Sportsbet Punters club, despite around 75% of our bets failing, it was still a lot of fun. Funds were easy to deposit and withdraw and would definitely do again, with better punters…
More about Sportsbet Punters Club
AFL and NRL Tipping –
Win $100,000 cash for the Best Tipster of the Year for #1st place, $50,000 for 2nd prize and so on all the way down to place 250 who receive a minor prize.
Same Game Multi –
Sportsbet’s Same Game Multi allows you to place a Multi Bet using a combination of legs from the same AFL, NRL or NFL match.
It’s available for AFL, NRL and NFL matches on Mobile.
Sportsbet’s promotions are pretty daring from a wagering companies point of view, and has cost them a pretty penny on the odd occasion. How do we know about their losses on promotions? They are pretty quick to tell us (fine marketing again there).
Some of Sportsbet’s more common promotions include…
4+ Leg Multi Bet Bonus – NRL, AFL – Get up to $50 back in Bonus Bets if your 4+ leg H2H multi fails by 1 leg.
AFL 24 Point Special – Place a H2H bet and if your team leads by 24 points in the match, your winning are paid out instantly.
