There are 3 common ways in which bookmakers present odds, and these include –
Used in Ireland and the United Kingdom, fractions quote the potential profit should a bet win, relative to the outlay.
eg. if £100 is bet at odds of 2/1 the potential profit is £100 (£100 x 2) and the total returned is £200 (£10 0 plus the £100 stake).
Positive figures (+): The odds state the winnings on a $100 bet e.g. american odds of +110 would win $110 on a $100 bet.
Negative figures (-): The odds state how much must be bet to win $100 profit e.g. american odds of -90 would win $100 on a $90 bet.
Decimals quote the potential return should the bet win, relative to the outlay. For example if $10 is bet at odds of 2.00 the total returned is $20 ($10 * 2) the potential profit is $10 ($10 x 2 minus the $10 stake).
Odds correlate directly with probability – e.g a 2/1 bet is expected to win one in every 3 attempts, hence the probability is 33%.
